New Democrat MP Isabelle Morin (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce--Lachine) gave a positive report of her year in the House of Commons and in the riding, at a press conference last Tuesday.

During the busy fall session, Morin organized several public consultations on importance issues, like noise pollution at the Dorval airport. She also organized an art show with local artists and raised awareness about human trafficking.

“This is a change from the Conservative government, worn down by power, plagued by scandals and unable to manage important files like the Nexen takeover and the F-35s,” said Morin.

In Ottawa, the MP fought with her New Democrat colleagues against the adoption of the Conservatives’ two budget bills totalling 800 pages. “These legislative monsters represent a severe setback for the environment,” said Morin. “99% of our lakes and rivers are no longer protected, Canada is no longer part of Kyoto and we’ve eliminated environmental assessments for energy projects. I have no reason to congratulate the Conservatives.”

After organizing a round table on youth unemployment, Morin questioned the government on this issue. “Slow economic growth must not become an excuse for not taking action on this issue,” said the MP, who is also the chair of the NDP youth caucus.

Bell’s palsy

Isabelle Morin had to take several weeks off after being diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. Fortunately, she is back to work in good health, ready for the next parliamentary session.

“I want to thank all the citizens who wrote to encourage me. I can now go back to the House of Commons and continue to hold the Conservatives to account. The contrast between Stephen Harper’s Canada and New Democrats’s Canada has never been clearer,” concluded Morin.
