Recycling becomes an environmental priority in Lachine
Reducing the volume of waste at landfill sites has become essential to safeguard the environment. This is why the Borough of Lachine invites all citizens to contribute to recycling while taking part in the collection of recyclables.
In 2006, Lachine residents sent nearly 17,840 tons of waste to landfill sites, whereas approximately 1,908 tons of recyclable materials were recovered. Although there was an increase in the quantity of materials recovered over the past few years, the individual production of waste collected door in door has also increased.
"Over-consumption and waste is a real threat for the environment, because they involve a important degradation of the natural system,” said Borough Mayor Claude Dauphin. “The capacity of our planet to absorb waste and to generate renewable resources is not unlimited; to preserve resources, it is important that each citizen modifies their spending patterns and adopts a responsible environmental behaviour. In this way, to recycle more is a step in the right direction."
The borough puts in all its work to encourage and facilitate recycling in all Lachine residences. In 2008, under the terms of the 1998-2008 Quebec Policy on the Management of Residual Materials, all Quebec municipalities must have achieved the goal to recover at least 60% of waste produced on their territory. Currently, the rate of recovery in Lachine is less than 30%.
