In Dorval, “D” is for dancing
Social dancing is more popular than ever as demonstrated by the success of many dance shows not to mention festivals and events throughout the year. But did you know that Dorval has been the home of an effervescent dance club for over 30 years? The Dorval Social Dance Club is accessible to dancers of all ages and levels and provides its members with much more than just classes.
But why dance? The benefits of dancing are diverse. They are physical, social and emotional. Dancing can burn as many calories as walking, swimming or riding a bicycle. Exercise physiologist Catherine Cram says "Once someone gets to the point where they're getting their heart rate up, they're actually getting a terrific workout. Dance is a weight-bearing activity, which builds bones. It's also wonderful for your upper body and strength.” A lifetime social skill, good dancing develops an innate personal confidence.

Opportunities continually present themselves to meet new people. The skilled and confident dancer develops new and meaningful friendships on and off the floor and experiences a sense of joy, fun, and new-found self-expression.

As for emotional benefits, they can be surprising. “By becoming good together on the dance floor, couples become good together in other areas of their lives as well.”

Part of the reason dance can help resolve conflicts between couples may have to do with the intimate contact inherent in dances like salsa or mambo for example. Research continues to show that human contact, and in particular hugs, are vital to our health and well-being. Interaction with others seems to lower the body’s production of the stress hormone cortisol. According to Tiffany Field, Ph.D. “Lowering stress hormones makes you feel more relaxed and calm.” Human contact has also been shown to strengthen the immune system, thus lowering your risk of illness.

Dorval is truly privileged to have such an active club that is so very accessible. The benefits of dancing no longer need to be proven but they can only be reaped if you dance!
