Following up since the Dog Walk of September 2008
We here in Lachine have been made too many promises. We were told last year in the newspaper (Le Messager) and by the City of Lachine that we will be awarded 3 dog parks in Lachine (2 by the spring of 2009 and the other 1 in 2 years near 48th Avenue), one east of the 28th Avenue and Victoria. Then the city was going to ask the residents around 48th Avenue if they can put a dog park there.
Elizabeth Verge has told me that the residents don't want a dog park there. And there has been no mention of the dog park east. I was told by Elizabeth Verge that the budget will only allow for the improvement of the dog park on 28th Avenuee and Victoria. That the city will start the work in the middle of May 2009 to expand the existing dog park with a 5 foot fence, water fountain, grass and a light.
So we have yet to see the work started it is now the end of May. I called the 311 number to see what happen plus we have not had poop bags for over 3 weeks in the dog park. Anyway I get a call back from Katherine Goldstein to announce the city will start on the park only in July or August. I mentioned all of the above to her and she still could not commit to an exact date and they had promised for the spring not the fall.
There are a lot of dogs in Lachine. We are not allowed in most places in Lachine and the least the city could do is keep the city dog park updated and friendly. Tourists are not going to come back and people are not going to want to move here.
The City of Lachine is known as the dog haters, and it is not a great repetition to have.

In my last days at the dog park in Lachine, I noticed that the Tecsult company was examining the observation wells they installed a couple of weeks back in the field to be used as the extended dog park. Tecsult is a company that provides soil analysis for municipalities among other things. It would be a good thing for all the dog owners to make sure the results of the analysis performed by Tecsult are made public. As you know the burrow of Lachine dumps snow on this land and has been doing so for many years now. Besides contaminants from snow removal operations such as salt and oil from the street it is possible that other contaminants move up from older industrial activities. I do not know what this land was used for in the past but Lachine being a former industrial city it is very possible other contaminants are present in the grounds. Again, make sure to have the results of the analysis made public before running your dog in the park.
