Lachine contributes to ease impact from financial crisis
Borough’s portion will be $643,130.00
The City of Montreal is adopting a preventive management approach to face the financial crisis by reducing its expenses amounting to $115 million as well as reducing the expenses of the Société des transports (STM) by $40 million. Lachine Borough is doing its part.
The Borough’s portion will be $643,130.00 as announced by Mayor Claude Dauphin. “The present economic situation, which is worse than we thought, forces us to be vigilant and rigorous. A detailed examination of all aspects of the budget is being done to see where savings can be obtained. It is possible that later we will be reporting on some projects that are less urgent”, Claude Dauphin told the Messager.
According to Me Dauphin, “we’re thinking of several scenarios to analyse. We will evaluate those areas where we can save sums of money without affecting the quality of services or employees’ salaries. We will scratch the bottom of the drawer. It is not a question of cutting services, confirmed the Lachine Mayor. The Borough has already considerably reduced its administrative structure in the last few years and it would be risky to continue on this path without diminishing the quality of services to residents.”
Me Dauphin added, “Lachine’s good management practices have placed it in a good position to confront the economic crisis. It has adopted preventive measures to anticipate the effects of the economic downturn. Prevention is better than a cure”, the Mayor said in closing.
The Borough’s budget cutting plan should be presented to the executive committee of the City of Montreal in the next few days with a view to adopting the general action plan during the municipal council meeting on March 30.
