Common law husband is principal suspect in this year’s first homicide
The first homicide for 2009 in the island of Montreal occurred in Lachine Borough last Sunday, January 4 in the afternoon.
The heart-wrenching drama which revealed a domestic scene in disarray took place in an apartment building on St. Jacques Street at the corner of Jolicoeur Street in the St. Pierre district. It was an elderly couple, and the victim’s name was Monique Tardif, 83 years old.
At about 5:00 pm, police officers of the City of Montreal Police Department received a call from 86-year old Roland Pelletier who said that a woman was lying unconscious in his apartment. Arriving at the scene, the police found the motionless body of an elderly woman.
The old man, common law husband of the victim, was questioned and then arrested. According to information sent to the Messager, the suspect had taken medication and later suffered a discomfort. He was taken to the hospital where he spent the night in the emergency room before making a brief appearance in court before Judge Martin Vauclair.
