A position paper from Lachine borough requesting the return of streetcars
As part of ongoing consultations concerning the Plan de transport de la ville de Montréal, the Lachine borough recently submitted a position paper in favour of a streetcar line connecting Lachine to downtown Montréal to city council's Commission permanente sur la mise en valeur du territoire, l'aménagement urbain et le transport collectif and to the <@Li>Commission du conseil d'agglomération sur l'environnement, le transport et les infrastructures.
The reintroduction of streetcars would significantly improve public transportation in Lachine, providing current and future residents as well as local businesses with a rapid transit line between their borough and the heart of the city. This service would also promote economic development in Lachine.
Furthermore, given the Ministère des Transports du Québec's upcoming Turcot interchange redesign project (expected to last at least ten years), a new streetcar route would mitigate the significant traffic issues this major undertaking is sure to create on Highway 20.
“My colleagues of the borough council and I are determined to make the Lachine streetcar a reality as soon as possible. With this project, we are taking another step towards our objective: making Lachine an even more dynamic borough and an even better place to live,” said Borough Mayor Claude Dauphin.
