At about 11:00 pm last Sunday, results were still trickling in for Lachine, but something was already apparent in the air: a decisive victory for the entire team of Mayor Claude Dauphin and for Union Montréal’s Gérald Tremblay.

As each vote was announced on the loudspeaker, Lachine’s outgoing Mayor Claude Dauphin, as well as the other four candidates for Councillor position garnered three times more the number of votes than their opponents. It was a 3-for-1 victory of sorts – a comforting fact for the representatives of Union Montréal in Lachine Borough. Their victory was also a victory for Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay, elected for a third term of four years for the city. “We were the best team. Our organisation was extraordinary. It’s a victory for Lachine’s real gang!”, Claude Dauphin exclaimed to his supporters who were all gathered in the Club des chasseurs et pêcheurs sportifs of Lac Saint-Louis, alluding to the fact that several candidates were not even residents of Lachine Borough.

Others elected and a first…

Outgoing Councillor and veteran Jane Cowell-Poitras, who has been consecutively elected without any interruption since 1988 was elected one more time for the position of City Councillor. Mrs. Poitras will therefore proudly celebrate a quarter of a century of political life with this new term. She is the first woman in history who was elected to Lachine’s municipal council.

For the Borough Councillor position in the Canal district, Union Montréal’s representative Lise Poulin easily won, despite a battle against five candidates, all of whom were new candidates. “It’s a first! A historical victory for someone who is handicapped”, said the new Councillor who is on a wheelchair.

For the J.-Émery-Provost district, the very colorful and outgoing Borough Councillor Bernard Blanchet obtained the best support compared to two of his opponents Raymond Dufort (VM) and Marc-André Rivest (PM). Mr. Blanchet thanked his team.

For the Fort-Rolland district, outgoing Councillor Jean-François Cloutier also had an easy win over his two opponents Claude De Lanauze (VM) and Jody Negley (PM). Mr. Cloutier praised his party - Union Montréal – as an “organisation that is united, solid and efficient.”
